Although there were some lower ratings for NBC during the 10PM time slot when compared to last year, Gaspin stated that the network had still been making money from the show. Affiliates, however, were unhappy that the show was providing fewer people to watch their late news shows. This was costing them significantly in revenue from advertising.  In December, some affiliates informed NBC that they would take their complaints public if something either was not changed, or Leno’s show was not plugged.

With the drumbeat growing louder, it became clear that NBC had to find a solution to the ever growing unhappiness of the affiliates. They certainly did not want things to escalate any further than they already were. So resolutions were sought to try to make everyone happier with the situation.

Gaspin made the proposition that Conan O’Brien’s Tonight show be moved to 12:05AM while Jimmy Fallon’s show would begin an hour later. However, neither of the hosts agreed to this. Gaspin is still hopeful that this situation will be cleared up by the beginning of the Olympics.

When Gaspin was asked if these proposals angered either O’Brien or Fallon, he would only say that they were both very professional as well as understanding about the situation. He stated that other than that, the conversation was private.
